Belk Auditorium and Wyatt Chapel were built together in 1960 at a cost of $500,000. The colonial Georgian design and large limestone columns complement the architectural theme of the campus. The auditorium was named after William H. Belk, who founded the mercantile chain that bears his name. The main auditorium featured a seating capacity of around 1,100 people, which enabled the college to greatly expand its lecture and fine arts series. For many years, commencement was held in Belk Auditorium.
Wyatt Chapel is named in honor of Mrs. May Henderson Wyatt, and is designed for small worship groups. Faculty offices are now housed directly across from the chapel in a space originally set apart as a Board of Trustees conference room. Once Thomason Library was built in 1974, the conference room was moved to the new library. In the rear of Belk stands a three-story fine arts department which houses the choir room, studios, and dressing rooms.
