Leroy Springs Gymnasium

In 1924, the Leroy Springs Gymnasium, funded by a contribution from textile executive Leroy Springs, was built as the new athletic center. Originally the first floor contained an armory, indoor rifle range, offices, and locker rooms, while the second floor housed a basketball court.

In 1929, Colonel Springs funded an addition to the building that created an indoor swimming pool on the first floor. For additional information on the Leroy Springs Swimming Pool, read more in the July 2013 Blue Notes column. An extensive renovation in 1984 brought Springs an extended porch with small columns and the Thomason clock tower (named for donors Mr. and Mrs. James H. Thomason). The main lounge and exercise rooms were added during this renovation as well as the post office.

A major renovation to Springs occurred in 2008. This renovation added a new fitness area where the swimming pool was previously located. New dining areas, a patio, recreation areas, post office, radio station room, and meditation room were also added. This renovation also provided new offices for Student Life and a Chaplain’s suite. Another renovated occurred in 2019, which added more seating for students, more meeting space for student organizations, and new staff offices. As part of this project, the gym was moved to the second and third floors.
