Collections or Folders

  • Items in Zotero can be organized into collections or folders
  • An item can be in more than one collection at a time
  • To create a new collection, click the new collection button in the top left of the Zotero window, then name your collection when prompted


  • Create a sub-collection by right clicking (PC) or control-click (Mac) and choose New Sub-Collection


  • Copy items to your new collection or sub-collection by selecting as many items as you like and dragging and dropping them into the new folder.



  • Attach tags to your references to help you organize and search for items in your library
  • Select the tags tab on the right-hand side of the Zotero window, and choose Add

  • Note that some items that you add to your collection will have tags already attached.  You may choose to delete some or all of the associated tags, or you can choose to simply add additional tags to these items.


  • You can search your library or individual collections by typing in the Search Box.  Use the drop-down menu to select what fields you want to search ["all fields and tags", "title, creator, and year", or "everything"].


  • You can also conduct an advanced search by selecting the Search icon.
